In order to support students with special educational needs (SEN) in improving their independent learning ability, Hong Kong Policy Research Institute collaborates with Lee Hysan Foundation, Big Education Platform and three primary and secondary schools in conducting a two-year project entitled ‘Capacity Enhancement for Self-Directed Learning via Library Upgrade and Technology-Assisted Library Modules’.

As the three important elements of the project, the library, technology learning and self-directed learning model are combined to enhance students' learning efficiency and the teaching quality in schools. Most local school libraries have remained mostly unchanged and underutilized since the adoption of the Standard Design for libraries in the 1980s. Although there is government funding for schools to purchase technological devices, without any guideline and training, school libraries in general are not put into good use in learning. Besides, standardized libraries are only suitable for students with competent reading and writing abilities, and are highly inadequate for SEN students.

This project aims to inject technology learning elements into standardized libraries, so as to assist SEN students in reading and learning by technology to achieve better results in their learning of knowledge and life skills.

The project has invited Fortress Hill Methodist Secondary School, Hong Kong Red Swastika Society Tai Po Secondary School and Aplichau Kaifong Primary School as pilot schools to track the changes in learning for SEN students in the new-type library, to study the use of technology in assisting independent learning mode and the library space, and to explore the new directions of special education mode.

Further details of the progress of the project will be announced in due course.
